Description
Joseph Thors (1835–1920) — Woodland Edge by the Water
A signed oil on canvas by the Dutch-born British landscape painter Joseph Thors, this intimate work captures a tranquil waterside woodland scene characteristic of his refined, naturalistic style.
Joseph Thors exhibited widely at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and regional galleries between the 1860s and 1900, and his works are held in numerous public collections across the UK. Thors is celebrated for his peaceful English rustic scenes. His draftsmanship conveys a deep sense of serenity, tranquility, and simple happiness. He avoided highly dramatic or theatrical compositions in favor of a “refined and contemplative” look at ordinary rural life.
