Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) is a renowned German visual artist, often regarded as one of the greatest living painters. In 2012, his work Abstraktes Bild (599) set a record when it sold for $46.3 million – the highest auction price ever achieved by a living artist at the time. Beginning his career in the 1960s and 1970s, Richter first gained attention for his paintings based on black-and-white photographs and his portraits of figures from the art scene.

In 1976, Gerhard Richter first titled a work Abstract Painting, marking the beginning of the style that would bring him worldwide acclaim. By the 1980s, he began using a homemade squeegee to drag layers of paint across the canvas, creating broad, textured bands that came to define his signature technique. Simultaneously spearheading this now popular technique.

Renowned for his mastery of both abstraction and (blurred) photorealism, Richter moves effortlessly between the two. Drawing from photographs of landscapes, portraits, and historical scenes, he reinterprets them through his unmistakable abstract creative language.
